According to the Wall Street Journal, Moby has increased his wealth with some property deals in a four-story apartment in New York City's Central Park West. In 2009 he purchased a 3,000-square-foot penthouse for $3.75 million, renovated it and is now putting it on the market for $6.5 million.
"I buy things with the best of intention of living in them and then life intercedes," Moby told the publication. "I find myself for whatever reason unable to live in the apartment I renovate and have to sell."
The property deals also extend to California, where Moby bought a "Tudor castle" near the famous Hollywood sign for $3.9 million when the original asking price in 2007 was $7.5 million. And in 2005 the musician paid $4.5 million for a "two-bedroom apartment" on Central Park West. In 2008, after another renovation, he sold it for $6.7 million. Two years later the same apartment was sold again for $4.65 million.
Although the man who single-handedly turned car commercial music into a genre back in 1999 said he barely made money on several property deals after renovation costs, it appears Moby's turned the corner regarding doing more than breaking even. Moby says he wished he was "some kind of wunderkind who knew how to buy places and make a ton of money off them."
Regardless of all the moves, Moby still has his small condo in New York City which he's owned since the 1990s. But he still has that property bug.
In a blog post on his site today (April 25), Moby said he was driving around Sunday afternoon and noticed a "castle for sale." The castle, shown in a series of photos, was "especially great" because it was near the "soul-sucking sunset strip," overlooked "a Frank Lloyd Wright house" and was "a really nice quasi-castle."
"A modern house that looks like an l.a. interpretation of an 18th century fantasy castle from the rhone valley," Moby wrote, adding "whoever ends up living there is probably going to be pretty happy to jump around in the pool in the shadow of their quasi-castle."
Moby released his last studio album Destroyed in 2011. A deluxe version was released last October featuring a full bonus disc of music, bonus DVD and 24-page booklet. The musician plays a DJ set at the Neon Desert Music Festival on May 26 in El Paso, Texas.
