Lil Wayne, Cash Money Settle $20 Million 'Lollipop' Lawsuit

Track's co-producer Deezle, who claimed he wasn't properly compensated, has settled for an undisclosed amount.

The folks at Cash Money Records just saw their pockets get a little lighter after they came to an agreement with longtime producer Darius "Deezle" Harrison. Last year, the New Orleans producer filed a court action for $20 million against Young Money Entertainment and Cash Money Records claiming he wasn't compensated for his co-production work on Lil Wayne's #1 2008 hit single "Lollipop." TMZ reports that Weezy has finally settled the case out of court.

Deezle produced "Mrs. Officer" in full and co-produced a few tracks off Tunechi's Tha Carter III, including the Grammy-winning "Lollipop." It was Jim Jonsin who served as the chief beatmaker on the song, and he too filed a suit in April 2010 claiming that he wasn't paid proper royalties from the track. Jonsin has since settled his case with the label, and now, according to reports, so has Deezle, thanks to a confidential agreement.

Hitmaker Bangladesh also had issues with the powerhouse label. In 2008 he claimed he wasn't properly compensated after producing "A Milli," another stand-out single from Wayne's triple-platinum Tha Carter III. Bang went on to supply the beat for "6 Foot 7 Foot" for Wayne's Tha Carter IV and claimed to MTV News that there was initially a payment issue with that track as well. In March, however, Bangladesh was happy to report that he and Cash Money put all of their differences behind them.

"We just did some nice business together. They just bought a whole bunch of tracks, that's about it," Bang said. "They gave me a song deal, basically, first song deal I ever had, so shouts out to Cash Money."

Artists Rep review: 'Next to Normal' bites off more than the average ...

?Next to Normal,? the 2010 Pulitzer Prize for Drama winner, is many things. It?s a tense, touching family drama. It?s a topical examination of mental illness and its prevailing treatments. It?s a romance, a tragedy, a ghost story. And it?s a highly emotional example of that most deceptively difficult of theatrical forms, the musical.
???????
Such ambition is admirable, especially in a show that offers so many delivers -- as the Artists Repertory Theatre production directed by Jon Kretzu does -- so many deeply poignant moments, with meaning for so many sorts of audience members. Such ambition also leaves the show feeling a bit overstuffed at certain moments, a tad schematic at others.
???????

"Next to Normal"

When: 7:30 p.m. Tuesdays-Sundays, 2 p.m. Sundays through June 3, plus 11 a.m. May 16

Where: Artists Repertory Theatre, 1515 S.W. Morrison St.

The subject matter -- a housewife?s struggle with unresolved grief and delusional bipolar depression -- isn?t typical musical fare, but the big, complex emotions involved fit the heightened atmosphere the form provides. Nearly the entire show is sung, however, and Tom Kitt?s melodies -- despite some nods to rock ?n? roll toughness -- tend toward the soapy; the whole thing could use a little more room to breathe. There's likely something intentional about the headlong rhythm of much of the show, and the particular poignancy of the rare moments when things slow down and get quiet. But it also points up the generic quality of Kitt's music.
???????
And yet, the staging here is crisp and calibrated. Susannah Mars anchors the cast (paradoxically) as a woman unmoored, giving the lead role both unimpeachable vocal precision and emotional commitment. The most affecting songs, though, come from Bill Wadhams as her loyal, long-suffering husband, showing the pressures of being the strong one in the family. And Kretzu has a real find in Meghan McCandless of Medford, still a high school senior yet capable of both a powerhouse vocal performance and all the right tones of resentment, anxiety and need as the couple?s neglected daughter.

95% Undefeated

All Critics (77) | Top Critics (29) | Fresh (73) | Rotten (4)

Volunteer high school coach Bill Courtney says, "Football doesn't build character. Football reveals character." The triumphant sports documentary "Undefeated" proves that it does both.

[A] stirring, emotional portrait of a high school football team in the impoverished neighborhood of North Memphis, Tenn.

It's a bit too long and a bit too vague at times, but this is a film about dedication, progress and the bond of human effort. It just also happens to include football.

"Undefeated'' needs less of what we know we've seen (the football stuff) and more of the players' and coaches' lives, which even if we feel we've seen, we haven't.

What makes this a terrific film is how much we care about the players.

In truth, the story that unfolds is better than the filmmakers' sometimes overwrought attempts to frame it ...

With a story that proves to be heartwarming and predictable, Undefeated mostly plays according to the script familiar in its fiction and nonfiction counterparts.

Even though the film relies on many of the clich?s of the form, Undefeated is a masterfully crafted work that honestly scores a touchdown.

"Undefeated" doesn't have a deep penetration of poverty and race in its playbook, but it does have enough heart to make substantial forward progress.

It's a surprisingly moving, emotional film, even for those who (like me) know little of football; by its end, you just might be blinking away a few tears.

Peers empathetically into a tiny world and opens it up for its audience, who, in turn, will surely open their hearts to it.

Combines the gritty reality of "Hoop Dreams" and the heart of "Friday Night Lights," along with a dash of "The Blind Side."

For all its good intentions, the film, like its main subject, is a tourist, earning trust as it earnestly captures the incredible struggles of these young men, but never digging deep enough to actually make the story theirs.

A touching documentary that offers a field-level portrait of male mentorship, compassion and unvarnished hope - all without a Hollywood ending.

It is a powerful reminder of the difference one person can make -- and of the consequences when no one is willing to make that difference.

What lifts 'Undefeated' above other sports docs is the remarkable force of Bill Courtney's personality.

It may call to mind The Blind Side or Remember the Titans, but there's no Hollywood glitz in the blighted burg of Manassas.

I regret that we don't meet more of Courtney's players, but that might have required a miniseries rather than a movie. And "Undefeated" makes sure the coach who is its central figure is more complex and fascinating than most fictional movie characters.

Usher Says 'Scream' Is 'Just In Time For Summer'

Following 'Climax,' singer tells MTV News his latest single 'represents the other side' of Looking for Myself album.
By Jocelyn Vena

<P>Bumping beats, sexy lyrics and <a href="/music/artist/usher/artist.jhtml">Usher</a>'s signature R&B bad-boy swagger can only mean one thing: the singer has once again hooked up with superstar pop producer Max Martin. Their latest collaboration, <a href="/news/articles/1683947/usher-scream.jhtml">"Scream,"</a> picks up where "DJ Got Us Fallin' in Love" left off back in 2010. </P><P> </P><P>Usher used <i>that</i> track to convince us to go home with him after a dizzying night of partying, and for "Scream," he's got us back at his pad and he's rocking our world, one fist-pumping moment at a time. While he opted to slow it down on <a href="http://rapfix.mtv.com/2012/02/16/usher-diplo-climax-love-affair-song">"Climax,"</a> Usher is back to large-scale dance tracks on <a href="/news/articles/1682140/usher-looking-for-myself.jhtml"><i>Looking for Myself</i></a>'s second single. And, he told MTV News, both tracks reflect the sound of the album. </P><P> </P><P><div style="background-color:#000000;width:428px;"><div style="padding:4px;"><iframe src="http://media.mtvnservices.com/mgid:uma:video:mtv.com:764219/cp~vid%3D764219%26instance%3Dmtv%26uri%3Dmgid%3Auma%3Avideo%3Amtv.com%3A764219" width="420" height="236" frameborder="0"></iframe></div></div> </P><P> </P><P>"This album has many different views and many different perspectives," he told MTV News while rehearsing for his one-night run as the lead in NYC's off-Broadway spectacle "Fuerza Bruta," which also served as a place for Usher to debut the album ahead of its release. "And me and Max Martin, we've had success together in the past, and this was a record I felt represented the other side of the [album]." </P><P> </P><P>"Scream" and "Climax" truly are polar-opposite tracks. Where "Climax" sears and broods, "Scream" celebrates and dances. Usher is excited for the chance to show all those sides with the two lead singles from the June 12 release. </P><P> </P><P>"Whereas the first song was a little bit more artistic and a little bit more soulful, and it has done everything, it probably exceeded my expectations, I mean, from the moment I was able to give it away. I was able to kind of be reintroduced in a way musically, and thank you to [producer] Diplo, but 'Scream' is really like the next step. It's just in time for summer and the type of experience that I want people to get out of the album." </P><P> </P><P>But the Atlanta-bred singer notes that the album can't be defined just by "Climax" or "Scream." There's a lot there to keep fans tuning in. "It's a ton of other experiences and a ton of other walks ... as I've had this long journey over the last year [and] every bit of what I've experienced I've put into a creative, artistic way," he said. </P><P> </P><P>As for the video, well, that still has to be shot, but he joked that "Fuerza Bruta" might serve as the perfect backdrop for the clip &#8212; or maybe not. "We might be shooting it while we're here," he laughed. "This is like a movie set, damn near &#8212; sh-- you don't normally see with the launch of an album. This is pretty spectacular." </P><P> </P><P><i>What are you expecting from Usher's next album? Let us know in the comments!</i></p>

Apple and Samsung set to meet May 21st, hug it out over 48 hours

These two brawlers were given until July to come together and mediate over their numerous globe-spanning patent lawsuits, but it appears neither side needs to wait that long. According to Foss Patents, May 21st and 22nd have been circled on the calendar of a certain San Francisco courthouse, where Magistrate Judge Joseph C. Spero will attempt to arbitrate in a calm, soothing voice for two days straight. Presenting himself as a confidant who sits outside of the main litigation being conducted in San Jose, Spero has already asked both parties to open up and provide "candid" statements about the strengths and weaknesses of their own cases, as a first step towards identifying areas of compromise. Fortunately, he still has a few weeks in which to devise further cunning plans.

NBA: How does a No. 8 seed beat a No. 1? Utah Jazz?s Devin Harris, Josh Howard know

NBA ? Two Utah players were on Dallas team that lost to Golden State in 2007.

San Antonio ? The Jazz?s Devin Harris and Josh Howard know it can happen. They?ve seen it with their own eyes. They?re living proof.

The first blow draws blood. The final punch: a killer knockout. The victor stands taller than ever, soaking in worldwide attention before moving on to a bigger, brighter stage. The loser rarely recovers. Careers are altered, lives are changed. Even as years go by, the mark always remains.

Making history

Only four No. 8 seeds have pulled off upsets of No. 1 seeds in the NBA playoffs. Just two teams have done it since 2003, when the league extended the first round to a best-of-seven series.

2011

Memphis def. San Antonio, 4-2

2007

Golden State def. Dallas, 4-2

1999*

New York def. Miami, 3-2

1994

Denver def. Seattle, 3-2

* - lockout-shortened season

Only four No. 8 seeds have ever knocked off a No. 1 in the NBA playoffs. Just two teams have done it since 2003, when the league extended the first round to a best-of-seven series.

The most-recent victim is the Jazz?s opponent Sunday in San Antonio. An injury-plagued Spurs team crashed hard in 2011, falling 4-2 to Memphis and immediately turning the Grizzlies into the most powerful team ever seeded eighth.

The only other No. 1 downed in the last nine years? The 2006-07 Dallas Mavericks, who were destroyed, embarrassed and ultimately undressed in the Bay Area, falling 4-2 to Golden State in what many view as the biggest non-championship playoff upset in NBA history.

How does a No. 8 unseat a No. 1? How does the underdog end up on top, reveling in "No one believed in us" stories and "They shocked the world" headlines?

Harris knows. So does Howard. They lived through the 2007 first-round earth-shaker, holding starring roles in the Mavericks? nationally televised demise. Harris hasn?t been to the playoffs since. Howard?s career hasn?t been the same. But they?re united again in Utah, and they know exactly what it takes for an 8 to punch out a 1.

"When I think about that series, I think about how confident [the Warriors] came out for that Game 1. That kind of set the tone for the series," Harris said. "That?s the most important thing. You?ve got to knock them back on their heels. You?ve got to come out aggressive. You?ve got to strike fear in them."

A Utah (36-30) upset appears almost impossible on paper. While the Jazz have strengths ? highlighted by inside depth ? the 2011-12 Spurs might be the deepest team Gregg Popovich has ever coached. San Antonio (50-16) is confident and experienced, surging into the playoffs by winning 21 of 23 games, leaving Popovich on the verge of outmaneuvering a lockout for the second time in 14 seasons.

If the Jazz are going to survive the Spurs, Utah will have to follow the road built by Memphis and Golden State. Both teams drew first blood with Game 1 road victories, then rose to a 3-1 advantage by picking up home wins in Games 3 and 4. The Grizzlies and Warriors played to their strengths by either going big (Memphis) or small (Golden State), stole home-court advantage, then didn?t hesitate to put away their top-seeded opponent in Game 6.

story continues below

Howard said Dallas? 2007 fall was humbling. It was also devastating for a Mavericks team that won 67 regular-season games. Dirk Nowitzki?s character was questioned, Harris was eventually traded to New Jersey ? soon joined by coach Avery Johnson, who was fired by Dallas in 2008 ? and it took four long seasons for Nowitzki and the Mavericks to exorcise the "We Believe" Warriors? shocking triumph.

"They blew up the team after that," Howard said.

For the Jazz to detonate the same explosion, everything from near-perfect basketball to luck will be required. Utah must contain San Antonio?s high-scoring, pick-and-roll based offense. The second-best scoring attack in the NBA (103.7 points) is guided by 11-year point guard Tony Parker, who?s playing the best all-around ball of his career. A multitude of Spurs perimeter shooters can?t be allowed to drain a league-leading 39.3 percent of their 3-point attempts, which is what everyone from Manu Ginobili and Danny Green to Matt Bonner and Gary Neal combined to sink this season. And while key Jazz players such as Al Jefferson, Paul Millsap and Harris must play the best series of their lives, second-year coach Tyrone Corbin will have to out-think Popovich.

Easy? No way. Probable? Not really. Impossible? Absolutely not.

Harris and Howard have seen it happen. Now they want to write their own history.

"I know we?re going to pose a challenge," Howard said. "We have athletic bigs. We have wing players that can challenge theirs. We have a great coach that?s ready to go in there and give it his first-time shot at the playoffs. With all that [talent] going around, the sky?s the limit. Kinda like what Golden State had going on."

The Jazz are four wins away from again proving No. 8?s greater than No. 1.

Down with the king?

If the Jazz pull off the upset, Utah (36-30) will knock off the hottest team in the NBA. San Antonio (50-16) finished the regular season on a 10-game winning streak, tied with Chicago for the best overall record in the league. The Spurs are 40-9 since Jan. 21, have compiled three winning streaks of at least 10 games, are healthy and rested, and might be the deepest team Gregg Popovich has coached.

Series changers

Jazz?s strengths ? Big Four of Al Jefferson, Paul Millsap, Derrick Favors and Paul Millsap; offensive and defensive rebounding; assist-to-turnover ratio; efficient offense; depth; transition offense

Utah?s weaknesses ? Perimeter and pick-and-roll defense; playoff inexperience; perimeter and 3-point shooting

X-factor: Josh Howard -? The veteran small forward has returned from arthroscopic left knee surgery and could provide invaluable experience for the Jazz at the perfect time

Spurs? strengths ? Big Three of Tim Duncan, Tony Parker and Manu Ginobili; pick-and-roll offense; perimeter and 3-point shooting; transition offense; depth; playoff experience

San Antonio?s weaknesses ? Rebounding; interior size

X-factors ? Gary Neal and Danny Green. The duo averaged three made 3-pointers a game and are two of the Spurs? best long-range shooters. If San Antonio consistently knocks down outside shots, the Jazz could be done in four games

Prediction: Spurs, 4-2

Australian billionaire plans to build Titanic II

A new Titanic could be sailing the high seas within a few years.

Australian mining magnate Clive Palmer announced plans Monday to build an ultra-modern, luxury version of the ill-fated ocean liner in China.Billionaire mining magnate Clive Palmer. (AFP Photo/Tertius Pickard)

Palmer, one of the richest people in Australia with an estimated worth of more than $5 billion, said he had commissioned a state-owned Chinese company to construct Titanic II with the exact dimensions as the original.

"It will be every bit as luxurious as the original Titanic but of course it will have state-of-the-art 21st century technology and the latest navigation and safety systems," Palmer said, according to AFP.

He said Titanic II would make its maiden voyage from England to New York in late 2016.

The news comes just two weeks after the 100th anniversary of the sinking of the Titanic, which hit an iceberg on its first voyage across the Atlantic on April 15, 1912, sending more than 1,500 people to their deaths.

"Titanic II will be the ultimate in comfort and luxury with on-board gymnasiums and swimming pools, libraries, high class restaurants and luxury cabins," Palmer said.

The cost of the new ship was not disclosed.

Palmer announced his Titanic plans the same day he revealed he would make a run for Australia's Parliament.

Palmer said he would seek the conservative opposition's candidacy for the seat currently held by Deputy Prime Minister Wayne Swan.

"Politics is about ideas," the billionaire told reporters. "You are not going to become rich being a politician."

First lady campaigns in Tucson in Western push

(AP) ? Democrats are hailing first lady Michelle Obama's visit to Tucson as the latest sign that Arizona will be up for grabs in November's presidential election, but Republicans insist that the state will go red just like it has the past three election cycles.

Obama is expected to deliver remarks at a fundraiser in the southern Arizona city on Monday evening as part of a four-state campaign push in the West, with other stops in Colorado, Nevada and New Mexico.

Her visit comes on the heels of stops in Arizona last week by Vice President Joe Biden and presumptive Republican nominee Mitt Romney.

Biden attended a private fundraiser on April 19 in Phoenix. The day after, Romney had a round-table discussion with Phoenix-area Hispanic business and community leaders before holding a rally in Tempe.

"All the indicators are that Arizona's in play," said Jim Haynes, president of the nonpartisan, Phoenix-based Behavior Research Center, which conducts election polls.

"The voters are obviously restless and wrestling with what they're going to do in November," Haynes said. "There's still a lot of question marks in their minds. And as things unfold positively and negatively on behalf of each one of them, I think people are going to bounce back and forth."

A recent poll by the Behavior Research Center showed that 42 percent of the 511 registered voters contacted across the state supported Obama, that 40 percent supported Romney and that 18 percent were unsure. Because the poll, conducted April 9-17, had a margin of error of plus or minus 4.4 percentage points, Obama and Romney are considered about even among Arizona voters.

In terms of fundraising, Romney has been more successful, raising $1.7 million in the state through March 31, compared to Obama's $1.1 million.

Haynes said that although Arizona doesn't carry the electoral punch like California, Florida and other states, it is highly coveted by both parties for its national reputation as a Republican stronghold and as ground zero for the immigration debate.

"Arizona's a symbolic state now, for both sides," he said. "It's big stuff for a Democratic candidate to be able to say, 'I'm running neck and neck in a state like Arizona.' The flip side is that Romney has a strong interest in keeping the so-called faith base safe.

"We're going to get a lot of attention paid to Arizona," Haynes added.

The last time a Democratic candidate won the presidential race in Arizona was Bill Clinton's re-election in 1996.

Shane Wikfors, communications director with the Arizona Republican Party, said the Obama campaign is well-organzied and has a network in place in Arizona and across the country, giving them an advantage.

But Wikfors said Romney's campaign is very disciplined and can come out on top.

"Our take on the Obama administration thinking that they can put Arizona in play is, let them continue to believe that," he said. "In fact, let them spend as much money here in Arizona as they want. Arizona is going to remain red."

He said Arizonans upset about the economy and the unemployment rate will vote for Romney.

Luis Heredia, chairman of the Arizona Democratic Party, said Democrats have thought they could win presidential races in the past but that there is a different energy on the ground in the state this time around.

He said Arizonans frustrated with the Republican-led Legislature will turn to Obama, and that the first lady's visit Monday should be the first of many high-profile visits from Obama's team.

"It's going to motivate Democrats for what's going to be an exciting summer," he said. "We're hoping her visit will be the first of many different things that will motivate voters, not only Democrats, but Independents and frustrated Republicans."

a common form of the disease. The identification of genes - Kiefit.com

Results from the largest genetic study of glaucoma, a leading cause of blindness and vision loss worldwide, showed that two genetic variations are associated with primary open angle glaucoma (POAG), a common form of the disease. The identification of genes responsible for this disease is the first step toward the development of gene-based disease detection and treatment. About 2.2 million people in the U.S. have glaucoma. POAG is often associated with increased eye pressure but about one-third of patients have normal pressure glaucoma (NPG). Currently, no curative treatments exist for NPG...

BBC's Planet Earth returns as a live simulcast next week -- but not in the US (video)

For fans of HD and / or nature documentaries, the BBC Planet Earth series is the unquestioned champion, and to provide a proper followup the Brits are improving it the only way they know how: doing it live. What the broadcaster calls its "most ambitions global wildlife series ever" will air simultaneously in 140 countries (more on that bit later) starting Sunday May 6th, then every Thursday and Sunday for three weeks. The plan is to track animals in seven different locations around the world in real time as they struggle for survival and broadcast it all in HD. One segment features Top Gear's Richard Hammond following a pride of lions across southern Kenya, while another will track black bears in Minnesota. The bad news? If you're in the US or Canada you're not on that 140 country list and won't be seeing any of this live. We're not sure if there's time to make this a campaign issue in the 2012 presidential election but we figure that, or at least bugging BBC America (while we're on the subject -- where's our global iPlayer?) is worth a try. Check after the break for a press release with all the details on where and when it is airing, as well as a trailer.

How to Choose the Best Logo Design and Branding Company

Apr

27

Choosing the best company for logo design and creation of brand value for your business requires careful research. You cannot rush to hire just about any company because the logo and branding are instrumental in carving out a unique corporate identity. Here is how you can identify the best logo design and branding company for the money that you want to invest.

Collect the Names of a Few Companies for Comparison

You can reach the best company only after you have compared the features of at least 5-6 branding agencies. You can get the names of the reputed companies through branding resource websites. Alternatively, you can gather the names of the logo design companies that created various successful brand names in the market.

See Samples of their Work

Ask the short-listed companies to show you their portfolios. Go through their designs and observe if their work proves relevant to your business. Do you think their designs captured the essence of the companies for which they created the respective designs? Additionally, ask them about the branding techniques they follow.

Find out how many business entities each of the potential candidates has catapulted to success with its services.

Learn About their Style of Working

Ask each company to explain its style of working. Does the potential branding agency endeavor to learn about the client company?s goals, values and products? Does it try to know about the client?s target audience, their needs and the message that the client wants to convey?

Also, find out the number of designers that you will get for your work. More designers mean more options in designs.

Learn about their Services

Ask for quotes from each company to know about its pricing. Find out about the turnaround time. Furthermore, does the company provide unlimited revisions? Does it guarantee to keep offering options until you are satisfied with the design?

Moreover, the company should have the resources to work with all kinds of media, be it print, mobile or the Internet.

Settle Only for the Best Logo Design and Branding Company for the Money that You Spend

Finally, compare all the information and choose the branding agency that meets your needs financially and professionally.

A strong brand will not merely set you apart from your competitors; it will make your company a class in itself. Your products and services will become synonymous with the core values of your business. Hence, choose a logo and branding company that has the potential of giving brand recognition to your company.

Growth likely dipped in winter, but 2012 brightens

(AP) ? The U.S. economy probably grew more slowly at the start of the year than at the end of last year. But it's expected to grow faster for all of 2012 than in 2011.

The government on Friday will make its first estimate of growth for the January-March quarter. The consensus forecast is that gross domestic product ? the output of all goods and services, from cars to electricity to manicures ? grew at a 2.5 percent annual rate, according to a survey of economists by FactSet.

That would be slower than the 3 percent GDP growth in the final three months of 2011. Much of the growth in the October-December quarter was due to businesses aggressively restocking their supplies. The pace of restocking is expected to have declined last quarter.

Trade probably also slowed growth last quarter. U.S. manufacturers are finding it harder to sell products overseas because of Europe's debt crisis and weaker growth in Asia.

On the other hand, the January-March quarter likely benefited from the milder-than-normal winter. It probably led consumers and businesses to step up spending earlier in the year than they typically do. Consumer spending, in particular, is critical because it accounts for about 70 percent of economic activity.

Many economists predict growth will strengthen in the second half of this year because they think hiring will continue to improve. Job growth has helped drive the unemployment rate to 8.2 percent in March from 9.1 percent in August and given households more money to spend.

"I am looking for steady but not spectacular growth this year," said Joel Naroff, chief economist at Naroff Economic Advisors. Naroff thinks the economy will grow 3 percent for all of 2012.

That would be nearly double the anemic 1.7 percent growth in 2011. The economy expanded 3 percent in 2010, the first full year of the recovery after the Great Recession officially ended in June 2009. In 2009, economic output had shrunk 3.5 percent.

Last year began with signs of healthier growth. But then the economy endured a series of shocks. Gasoline prices surged after political unrest triggered by the Arab Spring. The earthquake and tsunami in Japan slowed the flow of supplies to U.S. auto plants and other factories. And the European debt crisis and a standoff over raising the federal borrowing limit unsettled investors.

Gasoline prices have risen again this year. But the effect on consumer spending so far has been less. In part, that's because a warm winter meant families didn't have to spend as much to heat their homes.

Also, consumers this year have reduced their debt loads. Housing is inching back. State and local governments aren't cutting as much. Banks are lending more. And the threat from Europe's debt crisis has eased somewhat.

"Last year, high gas prices did a lot of damage," said Mark Zandi, chief economist at Moody's Analytics. "But consumers seem to be weathering the impact of higher prices much better this year."

Zandi said one factor that might hold back growth this year is a reluctance by some businesses to expand and hire until uncertainty over taxes and government spending is resolved.

That uncertainty could last most of the year. Congress and the Obama administration aren't expected to resolve their differences until a lame-duck session of Congress begins after the November elections.

The Bush-era tax cuts and a reduction in Social Security taxes will expire at year's end. And in January, across-the-board spending cuts would take effect unless Congress achieves a budget agreement by then.

"There is a lot of uncertainty with regard to future tax policy and future spending policy," Zandi said. "That is causing businesses to be cautious."

The government makes three estimates of the GDP for each quarter. Each revision is based on more complete economic data.

Dennis Merritt Jones: Taking Rest Is Wisdom for the Ages

Take rest; a field that has rested gives a bountiful crop. -- Ovid

I love the quote above from the ancient Roman Ovid: He reminds us that for millennia farmers have known that every so often they must allow a field to "rest" or go fallow between plantings. Fallow land is that which has undergone plowing and harrowing and has been purposely left unseeded for one or more growing seasons so the soil can rest and regenerate the minerals and other elements needed to grow vital, productive crops. Metaphorically speaking, our growing "field" is our mind and our body. It's no secret that how well they work together in the creative process to produce a life of purpose and meaning depends, in part, on how well-rested they are; our mind and our body both need appropriate "timeouts" if we expect them to produce a vibrant and productive life.

Having just returned home from a very rewarding but rather exhausting event I presented on the East Coast, I can personally relate with the necessity of giving oneself time to regenerate between all the things we do to be "productive" in our daily lives. Between hotel beds, early morning flights, restaurant food, long work days and jet lag, I came home feeling totally toasted. I gave myself the gift of sleeping nearly 12 hours last night and it was incredibly rejuvenating... and, while I still have a long "to do" list, I am taking an intentional timeout today to be with my wife, whom I have seen very little of as of late. I am certainly not complaining about the life I have chosen because I love it; I share this, in part, as a reminder to myself about how important it is to take rest -- I figure if I need to hear it, perhaps others may as well.

No doubt it can be challenging to carve out time to rest when our plate is always so full. Many of us are so busy doing whatever it takes to keep all the balls bouncing that we fail to even notice how depleted we are becoming until the wheels begin to fall off our wagon and something forces us to stop. In other words, if we ignore the need to purposely allow our "field" to occasionally go fallow the universe will implement provisions that will force us to stop and take rest. Those provisions go (progressively) by many names such as, lethargy, malaise, burnout, breakdown, disease and, if ignored long enough, death. Point: Healthy living things need time to regenerate. From a spiritual perspective, when we give ourselves the gift of intentional and proactive timeouts to regenerate we are, in a sense, inviting the sacred presence within to replenish the creative soil of our mind and body with the life force needed to nurture the seeds that contain within them a life worth living.

How well are you doing at taking rest when it is required? Sometimes it boils down to making choices that require eliminating some things to maintain other things. Prioritizing can be a lifesaving practice when done regularly and mindfully. It's easy to overcommit ourselves to doing far too many things and, in the end, everything and everyone involved gets shortchanged (including ourselves); the desire to want to do everything for everyone all the time can be a dangerous trap that leaves us feeling depleted and, in some cases, even resentful. Yes, our work matters. Yes, our family matters. Yes, our (fill in the blank) matters. However, if we don't take rest when needed, soon enough none of it will matter.

Suffice it to say that trying to grow a balanced, healthy, joyful and productive life in a field that has not been allowed to go fallow for a time is, no pun intended, fruitless. May you draw from the wisdom of Ovid and the farmers from antiquity to modern times and take rest when you need to. Your life's crop will be far more bountiful and beautiful and, the good news is, you'll be around to enjoy the harvest.

UK warned over marathon airport waits

LONDON (AP) ? An airport operator and lawmakers on Saturday called on the government to urgently address chaos at Britain's borders to prevent disruption for Olympic visitors.

Concerns have been raised amid lengthy waits for passengers arriving at immigration desks from flights into the British capital, including complaints from passengers who faced long lines on Friday at Heathrow's Terminal 5.

BAA Ltd., which operates Heathrow and Stansted airports in London, said Britain's border agency was not providing enough staff to conduct the necessary passport and visa checks, causing the delays and demanded Britain's interior ministry, the Home Office, takes action.

"Immigration waiting times during peak periods at Heathrow recently have been unacceptable and we have called on the Home Office to address the problem as a matter of urgency," BAA said in a statement. "There isn't a trade-off between strong border security and a good passenger experience ? the Home Office should be delivering both."

Heathrow typically handles an average of 190,000 passengers arriving and departing each day, with 69.4 million total in 2011.

Legislators have previously discussed their concerns about whether Heathrow and other London airports will be prepared to cope with large numbers of arrivals around the Olympics. The games run from July 27 to Aug. 12.

Those worries have been fueled by disruption experienced last summer, when Britain's then border chief relaxed some passport checks during the busy tourist season simply to handle the demand.

"There is a real problem and the problem has emerged over the last few months," Keith Vaz, a lawmaker and chairman of Parliament's Home Affairs Select Committee told BBC radio. "I'm not saying we should abandon checks, but it's a choice for the Government ? you either look at the way you deal with people when they arrive at Heathrow or you recruit more staff."

"This is not just about the Olympics, this is about what happens before and after, it's about Heathrow as a world-class airport and it's about our reputation, and we need to make sure we get it sorted," Vaz said.

The Home Affairs Select Committee plan to question Britain's Immigration Minister Damian Green on the issue next month.

Brian Moore, head of the U.K. Border Force ? which is responsible for immigration checks ? insisted his agency would continue to deploy staff in the same way.

"The vast majority of passengers pass through immigration control quickly. Queues are caused by a number of factors, including incorrect flight manifests or early or late planes which result in bunching," Moore said.

He also said his staff were "fully prepared to manage busy periods during the Olympics and will be implementing our well-rehearsed plans."

It was just yesterday that a corner of Sony's 16.1 megapixel NEX-F3 leaked onto the interwebs and now more photos have surfaced, along with a previously unannounced shooter, the Alpha A37 SLT. The pictures come courtesy of Yang Canggih, which says it had chance to demo the two devices yesterday at Sony's Partner's Conference in Jakarta (Curiously, the NEX-F3 post isn't live as of this writing, but Sony Alpha Rumors has the images up.) Starting with the F3, the mirrorless camera has last some of the curves found on its older sibling, the C3, adopting the angular edges that once made the NEX-7 the badass standout in the lineup. You'll notice that the shutter button and grip have an uncanny resemblance to the 7's, not to mention that it's clearly gained a pop-up flash -- a first for the lower-end NEXs. Past that, the rumored -- and self-portrait friendly -- 180 degree tilt-screen is also present, which'll likely give the C3 an edge over its siblings when it comes to composing shots. Also worth note, some of the buttons on back have been slightly repositioned.

Moving along, those hoping for a successor to the A35 will apparently have their wish granted with the 16.1 megapixel A37, which is essentially an evolutionary update. According to Yang Canggih, it sports the articulating display from last generation of NEX cams, Auto Portrait Framing (first introduced with the A57), four more effect modes (up from 11) and an ergonomic grip in the vein of the A77. Sadly, that's about all that's currently known, so hopefully we'll get an official introduction to the cameras soon. Head past the break for a shot of the A37 and then check out the links below for even more of both.

Kindle Fire grabs over half the US Android tablet market share

Kindle Fire

Data released today by comScore shows that the Amazon Kindle Fire has garnered over 50-percent of the Android tablet market in the U.S. With a 54.4-percent share as of February 2012, it sits alone at the head of the pack by a large margin, with the second place Samsung Galaxy Tab almost 40-percent behind at 15.4-percent of the growing Android tablet market. While it looks to be bad news for Android OEMs, it comes as no surprise to us.

The Kindle Fire, like the leader of the overall tablet market the iPad, has one big thing going for it -- a unified "ecosystem" for content. We're mostly advanced users, who read blogs and forums to learn the different ways to use our devices and all the associated tricks that go along with, but for many they just want an easy way to purchase and consume content on their tablet. Amazon offers that in ways that Google does not, at least for folks in the U.S.

We're thinking Google aims to rectify that situation, at least in part, with the launch of the Google Play store, and a mystery tablet device of some sort this summer. Google I/O will be an exciting time, that's for sure.
